Wine & Waves Bicycling Vacation

This wonderful and exciting week-long vacation is full of options so that you can control the right balance between cycling and relaxing! In fact, the only required tasks this week are pedaling and relaxing.  We take care of the rest; all of the details from your arrival to your return.  Our staff is nearby tending to your every need from luggage transfers to answering questions about vineyards and wine.  We arrange all your breakfasts, lunches, and dinners to ensure that your dining experiences are fabulous.  We create daily routes that allow the “spouse or friend of a cyclist” to ride just enough, but also offers them the ability to get to the next resort early enough to squeeze in a spa treatment or save a spot by the pool for that cyclist who chose to cycle after lunch.

Several options are available for our guests with this vacation: choose to cycle along with the guide or start earlier/later on your own; choose to stop at our points of interest or cycle on; choose to have lunch with the group or stop by that quaint local place you just discovered; choose to cycle 100 or 300 miles during this vacation…it's all up to you… this is your vacation - we’re simply here to organize, guide and support you!

Unlike our Ride, Wine, & Dine Bicycling Vacation, the Wine & Waves Vacation cycles from one town to another.  On the first day, you'll experience a ride from Napa Valley to Sonoma Valley; on the second day, you'll cycle on to the Pacific Ocean experiencing the waves and cool breezes; after that, you'll follow the Russian River back to the wine country with nightly stops in Healdsburg and Calistoga - the "Hot Springs of the West".  By the end of the week, you will have come full-circle ending your trip back in Yountville, the heart of Napa Valley.

Sample of our “5-night Wine & Waves” Itinerary:

Sunday, Day 1 (Your Arrival Day)
From either SFO (San Francisco) or OAK (Oakland) airports, you'll jump on the bus with Evans Transportation.
Once you arrive in Napa Valley, you will check into the Villagio Inn and Spa (gold level) or similar accommodations; our silver level guests will be staying at the Railway Inn or similar property.  After settling in, walk over to our shop to get fitted with the bike of your choice and helmet (we carry the latest models of Specialized Bicycles.)  Next, we'll give you a coupon for two complimentary glasses of sparkling wine at Domaine Chandon so you can toast to the beginning of your getaway vacation. Depending on when you get back, you are certainly welcome to enjoy a self-guided tour before dinner.  Tonight, we’ve made dinner reservations for you at one of the world-class restaurants that are abundant in the valley.

Monday, Day 2
This morning, we'll all meet for breakfast where you will have a chance to meet the other guests and your guides.  We’ll go over the vacation itinerary and options available throughout your vacation as well as answer any last-minute questions you may have.  We’ll also offer a crash course in Wine Tasting 101 where we will explain what all that sniffing and swirling is about; this will give you basic knowledge to help you make the most of your wine tasting experiences.  Afterwards, we'll walk over to the shop and get acquainted with your bicycle. Today, you’ll have 3 cycling route options: 1) riding 20 miles to lunch, then getting to know the van driver a little better as they shuttle you to your accommodations in Sonoma so you can enjoy a spa treatment before dinner, relax by the pool-side, or rest in your room with a good book; 2) cycling the whole route - a 32-mile ride to Sonoma; or 3) going the long way rounding off the day to 40 miles.  In any case, you’ll cycle through the Carneros region of Napa and Sonoma Valleys, world-famous for their white wine varietals and light reds.  The Carneros region also offers beautiful, picturesque views of rolling hills filled with vineyards and farms; at one winery stop, you can see all the way down to San Francisco (assuming it’s a clear day!)  You will enjoy your first day of cycling in wine country while absorbing the climate and spectacular views, but don’t wear yourself out - you still have dinner tonight.  We have wonderful accommodations waiting for you tonight - The Lodge at Sonoma (gold level) or the Eldorado at Sonoma (silver level.)

Tuesday, Day 3
It will be another wonderful day in Sonoma
Valley!  Today you will pedal from Sonoma to the Pacific coast.  After breakfast, cycle through scenic farmland, many lined with eucalyptus trees; following that, get a wonderful glimpse of the redwoods before ultimately ending the day in Bodega Bay.  The terrain today contains some rolling hills, or “bumps” as we like to call them!  Are you ready for something more than "bumps"? We also have a mountain route available for the cyclists who want the challenge.  Again, you’ll have 3 cycling route options today: 1) riding 20 miles to lunch, then getting shuttled you to your accommodations; 2) cycling the complete route of 48 miles; or 3) going the long way rounding off the day at 61 miles.  Regardless which option you choose, your room at Bodega Bay will be waiting for you. We’ve made reservations for you at Bodega Bay Lodge (gold level) or the The Inn at the Tides (silver level.)  We’ll be dining tonight at The Duck Club or possibly the highly rated, Seaweed Café

Wednesday, Day 4

After breakfast today, you’ll cycle 10 miles up the Pacific coast line, then inland following the beautiful Russian River which will ultimately take us back to the wine country.  Cycling today will be on relatively flat terrain, with 28, 45, and 55-mile options to Healdsburg.  We’ll stop at historic Korbel Champagne Cellars for lunch, a tour, and tasting.  Choose to shuttle to your accommodations from there or continue cycling.  We’ve made reservations for you at Hotel Healdsburg (silver & gold level.)   With so many great restaurants to choose from - all within walking distance of our hotel - dinner tonight will be "on your own" (a "date-night", if you will.)

If you’ve chosen our 3-3-3 Wine & Waves Vacation, we’ll be saying farewell this afternoon when we drop you off at a local car rental company where you may rent a car to get to your next destination or back to the airport.

Thursday, Day 5

Sleep in and relax this morning.   With only a 9 mile route to lunch, a late start is in order today.  We’ll have lunch overlooking the vineyards; afterward, you can choose to get in the van or continue cycling over the hill to Calistoga completing your desired 27 or 38-mile route.  Calistoga, the “Hot Springs of the West”…a perfect place to spend the night and experience unique spa treatments such as mud baths and hot mineral water pools fed by the natural geysers.  If you chose to cycle this afternoon, the cycling terrain will have earned you this indulgence; there is a hill that we can’t quite call a “bump” between Healdsburg and Calistoga...don’t worry, it’s not a mountain, but it is a climb that may seem never-ending...so, pat yourself on the back after that one!  We have your luggage waiting for you at the Cottage Grove Inn (gold level) or Calistoga Spa Hot Springs (silver level).  Dinner tonight will most likely be at Brannan’s.

Friday, Day 6

The final stretch!  Calistoga to Yountville… the heart of the wine country; so we’ll make the most of your last day cycling to world-famous vineyards and wineries that exist in this section of Napa Valley!  We’ll have lunch at an olive orchard nestled in the bordering mountains with beautiful views of the Napa Valley floor.  Afterward, you’ll cycle 9 miles to complete the 25 mile route today.  For guests who want more miles, they will have a 35-mile option with or without mountain climbs; for those wishing to “blow it out” this last day, we have a 52-mile option with mountain climbs too.  Once you’ve completed your chosen route, we’ll chauffeur you and your luggage to Evans Transportation so that you can get back to the airport.  If desired, you can add the cost of one more night; or, if your flight leaves early tomorrow, we can make recommendations for lodging near the airport.

Notes about our accommodations: We personally visit and inspect each property.  We meet the staff and owners/managers; thus, you can rest assured that any of the accommodations will offer you the perfect vacation in the wine country.  We’ll match your budget to our partner properties.  Accommodations in the wine country book fast…especially from May to October; thus, book as soon as you can to ensure that we can offer you accommodations at the level you desire.  As you can see, “silver level” packages offer a step above clean, casual, and comfortable accommodations.  “Gold level” packages provide luxurious accommodations at premier resorts and inns.  We attempt to provide rooms in the properties we have linked above; however, ultimately, your accommodations are based on availability with our partnered hotels.  Again, we’ve personally visited and inspected each property, so all properties in their respective price level are just as nice as the rest.

Notes about dining: We select fine-dining experiences each night based on Zagat ratings, responses from previous guests, and personal dining experiences.  Regardless silver or gold level accommodations, we dine together.  We reserve the right to limit guests to $50/person per night for dinner…typically, more than ample of a dining budget.

Notes about airport shuttles: Evans Transportation provides transportation services from both OAK and SFO airports to Napa Valley for $45/person one-way; however, you are more than welcome to rent a car and leave it at our shop during your vacation.  To use Evans, you must reserve a spot at least 24 hours ahead of time.  Click here to check out the airporter schedule and get the phone number for reservations.  If you are joining us on the 3-3-3 vacation, Evans does not have shuttle services from Healdsburg, but we do provide transportation to most rental car agencies in Santa Rosa or any town close to Healdsburg so you may pick up a rental vehicle to get back to the airport.

Daily Options available with your vacation: As you can see, you have the power to have every afternoon free.  Take advantage of the amenities each resort has to offer from spa packages, horseback rides, and heated pools to lounging around your room with a good book.  We include hotel accommodations in your vacation package, but you are responsible for incidentals and booking and paying for activities such as these listed.

Vacation Dates Available: We limit these bicycling vacations to 12 people per vacation date listed below; thus, book early to avoid sold out dates.  If you have a group of 8 or more, you can pick your own dates.

Restrictions:  On the other hand, some dates are not as popular as others.  This vacation package requires a minimum of 6 people.  If you are booking this for less than 6 people, please be comfortable with the fact that the trip may be cancelled.  In this unfortunate event, you may transfer your vacation package to one of our Ride, Wine, and Dine Vacations or to an available date in the future.

Our Bicycles: We take pride in our bicycle fleet...my grandfather used to say, "You're only as good as your tools."  Back then, “tools” meant construction tools as this was a way of life in our family. Today, the translation for our business is simple: TOOLS = BICYCLES.  We've teamed up with Specialized Bicycles and KHS to offer you great quality, current-year models for an enjoyable ride.  Whether you are a recreational rider or an avid cyclist with your own pedals, we have a bike and pedals for you.  Pick from road, road-hybrid, comfort, or full-suspension mountain bikes, tandems, recumbants …we even have electric bikes!  Although we offer no discount, we welcome you to bring your own bike, but frankly, there's no reason too.   For a complete list of our bikes and pedals, check out our List of Bikes.

2008 Pricing: Our wine country vacations are the most comprehensive in the market including ALL dining throughout your stay.   Select from our 5-nights, 5-dinners, and 5-days of cycling (5-5-5 Wine & Waves Vacation) or our 3-nights, 3-dinners, and 3-days of cycling (our 3-3-3 Wine & Waves Vacation.) Prices below are per person and based on double occupancy...if you are coming alone, please add the "single occupancy add-on" to the price. The only difference with our Silver and Gold levels is the accommodations.
